Ogun State Takes Bold Step to Boost Cargo Handling Capabilities

Ogun State, Nigeria, is making significant strides in enhancing its cargo handling infrastructure with the development of the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport (GIA) in Iperu. This initiative aims to position the state as a pivotal logistics hub in Nigeria and West Africa.

Strategic Engagement with NAHCO

As part of the preparatory efforts, a delegation led by the Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Olugbenga Dairo, visited the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO). The purpose of the visit was to gain insights into contemporary cargo operations, which are crucial for the upcoming construction project at GIA. Engr. Dairo emphasized the importance of this observational visit, stating that it provides the GIA team with a comprehensive understanding of modern cargo handling practices.

Progress and Infrastructure

The Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport is nearing completion, with reports indicating that the facility is 95% finished. The airport features a five-story control tower, a meteorological site, an apron, and a terminal that is still under construction. Notably, the site was previously a dumpsite, and its transformation into a state-of-the-art airport underscores the commitment of the Ogun State government to infrastructural development.

In December 2024, aviation regulatory agencies, including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), visited the airport and approved it for commercial operations. They commended the quality of facilities and the level of completion, describing it as a "world-class" infrastructure and a "source of pride for Ogun State."

Future Prospects

The Ogun State government is considering a concession model to manage the airport's operations, with three companies expressing interest in the concession. This approach aims to ensure efficient management and sustainability of the airport's facilities.

Furthermore, the airport is set to adopt an advanced Operating Permit, aligning with ENCAS 2023 standards, which surpass the conventional Aerodrome Certification. This move is expected to enhance compliance and operational efficiency, positioning the airport at par with global aviation benchmarks. citeturn0search3

The development of the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport is poised to significantly boost Ogun State's economy by facilitating the export of agricultural products and enhancing trade opportunities. The state government remains committed to completing the project and operationalizing the airport to serve as a catalyst for economic growth in the region.
